How best to Retire for the Day?

With a content heart and peaceful mind.

Retiring for the day

Ending your day on a positive note is the secret to a happy and healthy life. When you end your day right, the next morning is automatically off to a good start. You may feel stressed and worn out at the end of your work shift, but you still have a couple of hours to turn things around. You may have encountered your fair share of challenges and grievances, but all is to be forgotten by sunset. The final target of the day should be to retire to bed with a content heart and peaceful mind.

Here’s a list of things you can do to retire for the day in the best way possible

1. Take a Walk

An evening walk serves as a light form of exercise and helps the muscles relax. You can walk alone and reminisce in special moments of the day or have someone accompany you to exchange thoughts; if you have a pet dog, let them tag along. Walk outdoors on a quiet street or at a park nearby to savor the freshness of green landscapes.

2. Write in your Journal

Keeping a daily diary is a great habit, as it lets you preserve so many small and meaningful moments that are easily forgotten. You may write down all the good and positive things that happened to you on that day. Whenever you feel down and unlucky, you can recall all these small things to cheer up yourself. On the other hand, you can also scribble down all the negative or upsetting events of the day. This will relive you of your burdens, as it is a way of catharsis.

3. Enjoy a relaxing bath or shower

Soaking in a hot tub or standing under a cold shower (depending on the climate), is an effective method to wash away all the stress and grime you accumulated over the day. Taking a bath before bedtime is always rejuvenating, and it helps you sleep better. A person automatically feels at ease when they are squeaky clean and smell nice.

4. Read a Story

If you had a parent or older sibling who would recite a bedtime story to you as a child, you probably know how miraculous it is. Reading or listening to a story at the end of the day blocks all intrusive thoughts, and you are immersed into a wonderful world of fiction. When you fall sleep feeling cheerful, your dreams also tend to be pleasant.

5. Assemble an outfit for the next day

If you never get enough time to get ready in the morning and you are constantly on the verge of running late, do half the work before going to bed. The task that often consumes most of the time is picking an outfit. Getting this done when you have retired for the day is a lot more convenient because you are not in a rush. You assemble your look for the next day more consciously, so don’t be surprised when people complement you for the improved fashion sense.

6. Make yourself a warm and soothing drink

A warm drink that is free of stimulants works best when a good night sleep is the only agenda left on the to-do list. You can go with chamomile tea, milk with honey, or decaf coffee to induce sleep. Avoid sugary, caffeinated, fizzy, and alcoholic drinks because they will only deprive you of sleep and convert you into a zombie by morning.

7. Do some stretches and yoga

Even though intensive workouts are discouraged at the end of the day, yoga poses and free-hand stretches are recommended. You can even do these in bed to release the soreness and stiffness in your muscles and joints after a hard day. Examples of some relaxing bedtime exercises include the child pose, sphinx pose, butterfly stretch, knee-to-chest, and low lunge.

8. Play Music

If you live and breathe music, nothing else can be more satisfying as you retire for the day. Play an instrument that you adore or simply listen to your favorite artists. Losing yourself in the lyrics and/or rhythm of the music will clear your head of everything else and put you to rest.

9. Tête-à-tête with your beloved

You cannot end your day without saying goodnight to the individual who means the most to you. Drop them a gratifying message, give them a brief call, or just talk to them if they are with you. Ask them about their day, keep the conversation light, and whisper sweet nothings while slumber engulfs you.

10. Switch off your Gadgets

If you aim to retire for the day trouble-free, and sleep without any interruptions, put all your gadgets to sleep first. You’ve already tended to them the entire day, so now you deserve some time for yourself alone. Your smartphone is probably loaded with enticing apps, but they will only keep you awake and further add to your fatigue.
